雖然經過多年來防工作的努力,子宮頊癌仍然是台灣婦女最常發生的腫瘤,每年大約有4,000位婦女初次發現罹患子宮頊癌,而需要做外科手術及化學或放射治療。這對於個人健康和整個家庭幸福的影響都很大。子宮頊癌的另一個特性是一個若能早期發現則治愈率極高的一種腫瘤。

子宮頊癌確切發生的原因不是十分明確,但學者們在過去十年來的研究幾乎可以確定子宮頊癌生成與人類乳突狀瘤病毒(Human Papillomavirus HPV)在生殖道的感染有直接的關連。我們實驗室從事子宮頊癌與HPV的研究也有近十年,早期的重心放在確認這二者之間的關係,接著由基因分析的角度去探討人類細胞中芋些特定基因(如tumor suppressor genes等)的構造與表現和子宮頊癌發生的關係,同時我們也由分析HPV病毒上不同基因的構造改變與HPV致癌能力的相關性。近年來,我們更由HPV在子宮頊癌早期診斷上的價值,並且積極探討人類細胞中芋些基因表現是否會受到HPV怠染的影響而與子宮頊癌的移轉有關。
